Role: SEND Tutor
Phase: Secondary
Working Arrangement: In-person

About the Role

Quantum Scholars is seeking a patient, supportive and experienced SEND Tutor to provide personalised, one-to-one educational support to secondary-aged young people in Wells, Somerset.

The successful candidate will have experience supporting learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching approach to suit individual learning styles, abilities and emotional needs, helping young people build confidence, improve engagement and make meaningful academic progress.

Experience supporting young people who experience anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be particularly beneficial. The ideal tutor will be calm, flexible and resilient, with the ability to build positive relationships and create a structured, supportive learning environment.

This role would suit a tutor who understands the barriers some young people face in accessing education and can provide an individualised approach that makes learning accessible, engaging and rewarding.

Key Responsibilities

The role may involve:

  • Delivering tailored, one-to-one educational support to secondary-aged learners.

  • Supporting learning across relevant secondary curriculum subjects, depending on the tutor’s experience and the young person’s needs.

  • Supporting GCSE-level learning and exam preparation where appropriate.

  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and developing targeted activities to support academic progress.

  • Adapting teaching methods, resources and session structures to suit individual learning needs and abilities.

  • Breaking down challenging concepts into manageable steps to encourage understanding and independence.

  • Supporting young people who may experience anxiety, low confidence, school avoidance or disengagement from education.

  • Responding calmly and consistently to challenging behaviour, using appropriate positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques where necessary.

  • Building trusting professional relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and expectations.

  • Encouraging confidence, motivation, resilience and positive learning habits.

  • Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.

  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback to parents, carers and other relevant professionals where appropriate.

  • Maintaining professional standards, confidentiality and safeguarding procedures.

Essential Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working with secondary-aged young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.

  • Experience delivering one-to-one tuition or personalised educational support.

  • The ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual academic, emotional and behavioural needs.

  • Confidence supporting secondary curriculum subjects, including GCSE-level learning where appropriate.

  • Experience supporting young people who may be anxious, disengaged or reluctant to participate in education.

  • Experience supporting young people with challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

  • A calm, patient, empathetic and resilient approach.

  • Confidence building positive relationships and maintaining professional boundaries.

  • Strong communication and organisational skills.

  • Reliability, flexibility and a genuine commitment to helping young people achieve their potential.

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

  • An enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and the right to work in the UK.

Experience working within EOTAS, alternative provision or other non-mainstream educational settings would be particularly advantageous.

Quantum Scholars is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants will be subject to appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment checks.

Salary will be determined by the successful candidate’s qualifications and relevant experience, and will be in accordance with the client’s pay policy.
