SEND/SEMH Tutor – Somerset

Quantum Scholars are looking for experienced and confident SEND/SEMH Tutors to provide personalised one-to-one support to young people across Somerset.

A key requirement for this role is experience supporting children and young people who may display challenging behaviour and experience difficulties with emotional regulation, engagement or traditional learning environments. We are looking for tutors who are confident managing challenging situations, establishing clear boundaries and using positive behaviour strategies to help young people feel safe, supported and able to engage with learning.

The successful candidate will be patient, calm and consistent, with the ability to build positive relationships and adapt their approach to meet the individual needs of each young person. The role may involve supporting learners who have experienced barriers to education, school avoidance, disengagement or difficulties within a mainstream classroom environment.

This role would suit a qualified teacher, experienced tutor, teaching assistant, behaviour mentor, youth worker or education professional with experience supporting young people with SEND/SEMH needs and challenging behaviour.

The role may involve:

• Providing one-to-one educational and pastoral support to young people with SEND/SEMH needs.
• Supporting learners who may display challenging or unpredictable behaviour.
• Building positive, trusting relationships with young people who may have significant barriers to learning.
• Establishing clear boundaries, routines and expectations.
• Using positive behaviour support strategies to encourage engagement.
• Remaining calm, patient and consistent during challenging situations.
• Recognising potential triggers and adapting support accordingly.
• Using appropriate de-escalation strategies when required.
• Supporting emotional regulation and helping young people develop positive coping strategies.
• Encouraging learners to re-engage with education and develop confidence in their abilities.
• Adapting learning activities, resources and approaches to suit individual needs.
• Supporting academic progress in areas appropriate to the tutor’s experience and subject knowledge.
• Developing confidence, resilience, independence and positive attitudes towards learning.
• Helping young people overcome barriers that may prevent them from accessing education.
• Supporting the development of communication, organisation and social skills where appropriate.
• Providing encouragement and reassurance during periods of frustration or disengagement.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback to parents/carers and other professionals.
• Working collaboratively with families, schools and other members of the young person’s support team.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Essential requirements:

• Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Significant experience supporting young people who display challenging behaviour.
• Confidence managing challenging, distressed or unpredictable behaviour appropriately.
• Experience in a school, tutoring, alternative provision, mentoring, youth work or similar setting.
• Experience providing one-to-one support is desirable.
• Understanding of positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
• A calm, patient, consistent and empathetic approach.
• Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
• Ability to adapt support and communication to individual learning, emotional and behavioural needs.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
• Flexible and resilient approach to supporting young people who may experience significant barriers to education.
• Reliable and consistent approach to work.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
