Location: Hereford, Herefordshire
Subject: Science
Phase: Primary / Secondary
Working Arrangement: In-person

About the Role

Quantum Scholars is seeking a patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH Science Tutor to provide personalised, one-to-one tuition to a young person in Hereford. This role would suit a tutor who can adapt their teaching approach to meet individual needs and help learners who may face barriers to accessing mainstream education.

The successful candidate will have strong Science subject knowledge and experience supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You will be able to break down complex scientific concepts, make learning accessible and create a positive environment in which the pupil can develop their understanding and confidence.

Experience supporting young people who experience anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be particularly beneficial. The ideal tutor will be flexible, resilient and empathetic, with the ability to build positive relationships and encourage engagement at a pace that suits the learner.

Sessions may take place in the young person’s home or another suitable learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

The role may involve:

  • Delivering tailored, one-to-one Science tuition to meet the learner’s individual needs and abilities.

  • Supporting learning across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, depending on the pupil’s level and curriculum requirements.

  • Providing support with GCSE Science content and exam preparation where appropriate.

  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and developing targeted activities to support progress.

  • Breaking down scientific concepts into manageable steps and explaining topics in clear, accessible ways.

  • Adapting teaching methods, resources and session structure to suit the learner’s interests, strengths and learning style.

  • Using practical examples and real-world applications to make Science engaging and relevant.

  • Supporting a young person who may experience barriers to mainstream education, including anxiety, low confidence, school avoidance or disengagement.

  • Responding calmly and consistently to challenging behaviour, using appropriate strategies to encourage positive engagement.

  • Building a trusting professional relationship while maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries.

  • Encouraging confidence, independence, resilience and positive learning habits.

  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback to parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner’s education, where appropriate.

  • Maintaining professional standards, confidentiality and safeguarding procedures.

Essential Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong Science subject knowledge and the ability to teach at the appropriate level.

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.

  • Experience delivering one-to-one tuition or personalised educational support.

  • The ability to adapt teaching approaches to accommodate different learning needs and abilities.

  • A calm, patient, flexible and empathetic approach.

  • Confidence supporting learners who may be anxious, reluctant to engage or disengaged from education.

  • Experience supporting young people with challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

  • Strong communication and organisational skills.

  • Reliability and a genuine commitment to helping young people make progress.

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

  • An enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and the right to work in the UK.

Experience working in EOTAS, alternative provision or other non-mainstream educational settings would be particularly advantageous.

Quantum Scholars is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants will be subject to appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment checks.

Salary will be determined by the successful candidate’s qualifications and relevant experience, and will be in accordance with the client’s pay policy.
