SEND/SEMH Maths Tutor – Taunton

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH Maths Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to secondary-aged young people in Taunton.

The successful tutor will have strong Maths subject knowledge and experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual learning needs and helping young people build confidence in Maths.

The role may involve supporting learners who have experienced barriers to mainstream education, disengagement, anxiety, school avoidance or difficulties accessing learning within a traditional classroom environment. The ability to build positive relationships and create a calm, supportive learning environment is essential.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:

• Providing personalised one-to-one Maths tuition to secondary-aged learners.
• Supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Teaching Maths across the secondary curriculum, including GCSE where appropriate.
• Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support.
• Supporting areas such as number, algebra, geometry, statistics, ratio, proportion and problem solving.
• Adapting lessons, resources and teaching methods to suit individual learning needs.
• Breaking down complex mathematical concepts into manageable steps.
• Supporting learners who may lack confidence or have negative experiences of Maths.
• Helping young people develop confidence, resilience and independence.
• Supporting GCSE revision, exam preparation and exam technique where appropriate.
• Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
• Encouraging engagement and helping learners overcome barriers to education.
• Using the learner’s interests and strengths to make lessons engaging and accessible.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the young person.
• Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner’s education.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Essential requirements:

• Strong Maths subject knowledge at secondary level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring Maths.
• Experience supporting children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Experience providing one-to-one educational support is desirable.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.
• Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education is desirable.
• A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
• Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
• Confidence supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Reliable and consistent approach to work.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
