SEND Philosophy Tutor – Wokingham

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND Philosophy Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person in Wokingham.
The successful tutor will have strong Philosophy subject knowledge and experience supporting secondary-aged learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual learning needs, while creating a calm and positive environment where the learner can build confidence, develop critical thinking skills and engage with philosophical ideas.
Experience supporting young people with anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.
The role may involve:
- Providing personalised one-to-one Philosophy tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
- Supporting the learner with relevant aspects of the Philosophy curriculum, including GCSE or A-level content where appropriate.
- Covering philosophical topics such as ethics, morality, knowledge, truth, reality, free will and arguments about the existence of God, depending on the learner’s needs and level of study.
- Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support.
- Breaking down complex philosophical concepts and theories into manageable and accessible steps.
- Adapting teaching methods, resources and lesson pace to suit individual learning needs.
- Developing critical thinking, reasoning, analysis and evaluation skills.
- Supporting the learner to understand different philosophical perspectives and construct balanced arguments.
- Building confidence in expressing opinions, explaining ideas and justifying conclusions.
- Supporting written responses, essay structure and the use of evidence where appropriate.
- Supporting GCSE or A-level revision, exam preparation and exam technique where relevant.
- Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.
- Supporting learners who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education.
- Helping the learner develop confidence, resilience and independence.
- Encouraging curiosity, engagement and positive attitudes towards learning.
- Using the learner’s interests and strengths to make sessions engaging and accessible.
- Supporting learners who may experience SEMH needs, anxiety or challenging behaviour.
- Using positive behaviour strategies and appropriate de-escalation approaches where required.
- Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
- Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
- Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner’s education.
- Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.
Essential requirements:
- Strong Philosophy subject knowledge at the appropriate secondary or post-16 level.
- Experience teaching or tutoring Philosophy, or a closely related subject.
- Experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Experience providing one-to-one or personalised educational support is desirable.
- Ability to explain complex ideas clearly and adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.
- Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education is desirable.
- Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
- A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
- Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
- Confidence supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Reliable and consistent approach to work.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
