SEND/SEMH English Tutor – Bridgwater

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person in Bridgwater.

The successful tutor will have strong English subject knowledge and experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual learning needs and creating a calm, supportive environment where the young person can feel comfortable and confident engaging with education.

Experience supporting learners who have struggled within a mainstream school environment, experienced anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:

• Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
• Supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Supporting the secondary English curriculum, including GCSE where appropriate.
• Developing reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar and vocabulary skills.
• Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support.
• Planning engaging, accessible and appropriately challenging English lessons.
• Adapting teaching methods, resources and lesson pace to suit individual needs.
• Supporting a learner who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education.
• Helping to rebuild confidence, motivation and engagement with English.
• Supporting GCSE preparation, revision and exam technique where appropriate.
• Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
• Using the learner’s interests to encourage engagement and participation.
• Supporting the development of communication, literacy and independent learning skills.
• Encouraging confidence, resilience and positive attitudes towards education.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the young person.
• Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner’s education.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Essential requirements:

• Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring English.
• Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Experience providing one-to-one educational support is desirable.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.
• Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education is desirable.
• A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
• Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
• Confidence supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
• Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Reliable and consistent approach to work.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
