As Second in Charge, you will work closely with the Head of Department to lead teaching and learning, drive student outcomes, and support department staff. This role is ideal for an experienced teacher looking to transition into middle leadership or someone already holding responsibility within a department.
Key Responsibilities

Support the Head of Science in leading the department, including planning, assessment, and curriculum development.

Deliver outstanding lessons in your specialist subject (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) across Key Stages 3 to 5.

Contribute to the strategic development of the Science curriculum and enrichment activities.

Provide mentoring and support for colleagues within the department.

Assist in analysing student performance data and implementing strategies to improve attainment and progress.

Uphold high standards of teaching and learning in line with the school’s ethos and values.

Lead departmental initiatives and deputise for the Head of Science as needed.
Requirements

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.

A strong academic background in a Science discipline.

Proven track record of excellent classroom practice and student progress.

Experience teaching Science at KS3 and KS4 (KS5 desirable).

Evidence of leadership capacity or experience in a departmental role (e.g., Key Stage Coordinator, subject lead).

Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.

Passion for Science education and the ability to inspire students and staff alike.
