Alternative Provision Tutor (Primary & Secondary) – Somerset
Primary | English | Maths | Science | SEND | 1:1 Tuition | Flexible Opportunities | September 2026
Quantum Scholars is expanding its team of Alternative Provision Tutors across Somerset in preparation for an increase in EOTAS (Education Otherwise Than at School) and Alternative Provision referrals from September 2026.
We are looking for compassionate, adaptable, and experienced tutors to provide high-quality 1:1 tuition to primary and secondary-aged pupils who are unable to attend mainstream school.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference by supporting young people to re-engage with education through personalised learning.
About the Role
As an Alternative Provision Tutor, you will work with pupils aged 5-16 who have been referred by Somerset Council for a variety of reasons. Every learner is different, so sessions are tailored to their individual academic ability, learning style, and personal circumstances.
We are particularly interested in tutors who can deliver:
- Primary (KS1 & KS2)
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
Many of the young people we support have additional needs, including SEND, SEMH, autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma, medical needs, behavioural challenges, or EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance). Experience adapting lessons to meet a range of learning needs is highly desirable.
Tuition is delivered on a 1:1 basis, usually within the student’s home or an appropriate community venue.
Whether you’re an experienced tutor, a qualified teacher looking to step away from the classroom, or a supply teacher seeking greater flexibility, this role offers the opportunity to have a meaningful impact while working around your availability.
With referrals expected to increase significantly from September 2026, work is available from a few hours per week through to regular, ongoing assignments that can become close to full-time for tutors with wider availability.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience teaching or tutoring primary, English, Maths and/or Science.
- Experience supporting children or young people with SEND or additional learning needs.
- The ability to build positive relationships and engage learners who may have had negative experiences of education.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- An Enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is welcomed but not essential.
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is highly desirable due to the nature of community-based tuition.
What We Offer
- Flexible working that fits around your schedule.
- Ongoing referrals throughout the academic year.
- Competitive hourly rates, dependent on experience.
- The opportunity to make a lasting impact through personalised 1:1 tuition.
- Dedicated consultant support throughout your placements.
Please note that applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, visa sponsorship is not available for these positions.
If you’re passionate about helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning and would like to play a key role in their educational journey, we’d love to hear from you.
