1:1 SEND English Tutor – Yeovil

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced 1:1 SEND English Tutor to provide personalised English tuition to a young person in Yeovil.

The successful tutor will have experience supporting learners with SEND and be able to adapt their teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual needs. You will be confident building a positive relationship with the learner and creating a calm, supportive environment where they feel comfortable engaging with education.

Experience supporting young people who have barriers to mainstream education, including anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or SEMH needs, would be highly desirable.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:

• Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
• Supporting a young person with SEND and/or additional learning needs.
• Adapting lessons, resources and teaching approaches to suit individual needs.
• Supporting reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar and vocabulary.
• Identifying gaps in knowledge and areas requiring additional support.
• Developing confidence in reading and written communication.
• Supporting the secondary English curriculum and GCSE preparation where appropriate.
• Breaking learning into manageable and accessible steps.
• Using engaging activities and resources to encourage participation.
• Supporting a learner who may experience anxiety, school avoidance or disengagement.
• Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
• Developing confidence, independence and positive attitudes towards learning.
• Using the learner’s interests and strengths to encourage engagement.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
• Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the young person’s support.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Essential requirements:

• Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring English.
• Experience working with children or young people with SEND.
• Experience providing one-to-one support is desirable.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual SEND needs.
• Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education.
• A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
• Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
• Experience supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
• Reliable and consistent approach to work.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
