Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one educational support to a young person in Yeovil.
The successful tutor will have strong English subject knowledge and experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace, resources and explanations to meet individual needs, while helping the learner build confidence and make positive academic progress.
Experience supporting young people who have barriers to accessing mainstream education, including anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour, would be highly desirable.
The ability to create a calm, structured and supportive learning environment will be essential.
This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.
The role may involve:
- Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
- Supporting a young person with SEND and/or additional learning needs.
- Supporting the secondary English curriculum and GCSE preparation where appropriate.
- Developing skills in reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar and vocabulary.
- Supporting English Language and/or English Literature where appropriate.
- Identifying gaps in learning and providing targeted support.
- Adapting lessons, resources and teaching approaches to meet individual needs.
- Breaking learning into manageable and accessible steps.
- Developing confidence in reading, written communication and analytical skills.
- Supporting a learner who may experience anxiety, school avoidance or disengagement.
- Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
- Using engaging activities and the learner’s interests and strengths to encourage participation.
- Supporting learners who may display challenging or unpredictable behaviour where appropriate.
- Helping the learner develop confidence, resilience and independence.
- Supporting GCSE revision, exam preparation and exam technique where appropriate.
- Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
- Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
- Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the young person’s support.
- Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.
Essential requirements:
- Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.
- Experience teaching or tutoring English.
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Experience providing one-to-one educational support.
- Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual SEND needs.
- Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to accessing mainstream education.
- Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
- A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
- Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
- Experience supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
