Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced EOTAS Science Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one educational support to a secondary-aged young person in Minehead.
The successful tutor will have strong Science subject knowledge and experience supporting young people who are unable to access mainstream education. Experience working with SEND and/or SEMH needs would be highly desirable, alongside the ability to adapt teaching style, pace, resources and expectations to meet the learner’s individual needs.
The role will focus not only on academic progress, but also on rebuilding confidence, encouraging engagement and helping the learner develop a positive relationship with education. A calm, consistent, flexible and nurturing approach will be essential.
Experience supporting young people with anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be particularly beneficial.
This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.
The role may involve:
- Providing personalised one-to-one Science tuition to a secondary-aged learner accessing EOTAS.
- Supporting the secondary Science curriculum according to the learner’s age, ability and individual learning goals.
- Supporting Biology, Chemistry and Physics depending on the learner’s needs and the tutor’s subject specialism.
- Adapting lessons, resources, activities and teaching approaches to suit the learner.
- Breaking complex scientific concepts into manageable and accessible steps.
- Identifying gaps in scientific knowledge and providing targeted support.
- Supporting a learner who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education.
- Helping the learner re-engage with education in a positive and meaningful way.
- Supporting anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement and other barriers to learning.
- Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
- Using the learner’s interests and strengths to encourage curiosity and engagement.
- Supporting practical and theoretical aspects of Science where appropriate.
- Supporting GCSE Science and exam preparation where appropriate.
- Developing confidence, independence and positive attitudes towards learning.
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive learning behaviours.
- Supporting challenging or unpredictable behaviour using appropriate strategies where required.
- Monitoring progress, engagement and development.
- Providing appropriate feedback to parents/carers and other professionals.
- Building a positive, consistent and trusting relationship with the learner.
- Working collaboratively with the wider support team.
- Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.
Essential requirements:
- Strong Science subject knowledge at secondary level.
- Experience teaching or tutoring Science.
- Experience working with secondary-aged young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Experience supporting learners who are unable to access mainstream education.
- Experience providing one-to-one or personalised educational support.
- Experience within EOTAS, Alternative Provision, outreach, tutoring or a similar setting would be highly desirable.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods, resources and pace to meet individual needs.
- Experience supporting learners who may be anxious, reluctant or disengaged from education.
- Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
- A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
- Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to create a positive and structured learning environment.
- Reliable and consistent approach to work.
